Best free dating apps: 8 where you can actually message without paying

Eight free dating apps where messaging your matches costs nothing, with what the free tier includes, where the paywall starts and US prices as of November 2026.

“Free” on a dating app usually means free to download. The real question is whether you can talk to the people you match with without paying, and on some well-known apps you can’t. eharmony, for example, says exchanging messages after a match requires Premium. It didn’t make this list.

The eight below let you message your matches on a free account, according to their own app listings, help pages or announcements, checked November 4, 2026.

“From” prices are the lowest subscription price shown on each app’s US App Store listing on November 4, 2026. Many listings don’t say what duration a price covers, so the cheapest number may be a short plan.

How we picked

One rule: the app’s own listing, help page or announcement has to say you can message matches without paying. After that, we ordered the list by how much a free account actually gets you, most first. Every app here is live in the US App Store and was updated within the past month when we checked.

1. Facebook Dating

Free tier: everything · Paid: none

Facebook Dating is the only app here with no paid tier at all. Meta calls it “a free dating experience within the Facebook app” and says the goal is to help people meet without “paying to unlock product features” (Meta, September 2025). Its newer features, a chat-based dating assistant and Meet Cute (a weekly surprise match you can turn off), are free too.

The catch is that you need a Facebook account, and the pool depends on how many people near you have turned Dating on. Meta says your Dating profile and conversations stay separate from the rest of Facebook. More in our Facebook Dating guide.

2. OkCupid

Free tier: messaging, questions, daily picks · Paid: OkCupid Premium, A-List

OkCupid gives free users its whole matching engine: answer from more than 500 questions, get a compatibility score on each profile, and browse Cupid’s Picks, a daily set of suggestions. You can start conversations without paying.

What a subscription adds, per OkCupid’s own listing: seeing everyone who liked you, unlimited likes and turning your preferences into strict dealbreakers. The US App Store lists OkCupid Premium from $7.99 to $59.99 and A-List at $9.99 (checked November 4, 2026).

3. Plenty of Fish

Free tier: unlimited messaging with matches, one First Contact a day · Paid: POF Premium, tokens

Plenty of Fish is generous once you match. Its Google Play listing says that when you both swipe right in Meet Me, you get unlimited messaging with each other. On top of that, every user gets one First Contact a day, a message straight to someone’s inbox before you’ve matched.

Paid options on the US App Store (checked November 4, 2026) include a one-week subscription at $19.99, one month at $29.99 and POF Premium at $29.99, plus tokens from $1.99.

4. Hinge

Free tier: messaging, prompts, Selfie Verification · Paid: Hinge+, HingeX

Hinge says plainly that “the app is free to use.” You can like or comment on part of someone’s profile, match and message without paying. What you pay for is volume and visibility: Hinge+ gives unlimited likes and shows everyone who liked you, and HingeX adds enhanced recommendations and priority likes.

The US App Store lists Hinge+ at $16.99 and $19.99 and other Hinge subscriptions from $14.99 to $34.99, without durations (checked November 4, 2026). The free daily like cap is the limit most people hit first; our page on whether Hinge is worth paying for covers when an upgrade makes sense.

5. Bumble

Free tier: messaging, ID Verification, video chat · Paid: Premium, Boost, Premium+

Since August 11, 2026, either person in a Bumble match can send the first message. You get one opener, the other person has 72 hours to reply, and the chat opens when they do (Bumble announcement). None of that needs a subscription.

Premium adds advanced filters, Incognito Mode, Travel Mode, rematching expired connections and seeing who likes you. The US App Store shows Bumble Premium at $17.99, $19.99 and $32.99, with no durations listed (checked November 4, 2026).

6. Tinder

Free tier: swiping, matching, chat · Paid: Tinder Plus, Gold, Platinum

Tinder’s App Store listing says you can send likes, match and chat “at your own pace without paying.” The free experience now includes photo verification, Share My Date, Incognito Mode and Double Date.

Paid tiers add unlimited likes, weekly Super Likes, rewinds and Boosts, and higher tiers show who already liked you. US App Store prices (checked November 4, 2026): Tinder Plus $9.99, Tinder Gold $13.99 to $24.99, durations not stated.

7. Coffee Meets Bagel

Free tier: curated daily matches, chat · Paid: Premium, Platinum

Coffee Meets Bagel sends a small daily batch of matches and lets you chat for free, with a twist: conversations have a seven-day limit, built to push you toward a date or a clean exit.

Premium adds unlimited Suggested profiles, all your likes, flowers and a monthly Boost. US App Store prices (checked November 4, 2026): Premium $34.99 or $39.99 a month, $74.99 for three months; Platinum $46.99 or $54.99 a month.

8. Boo

Free tier: likes, passes, messaging matches, personality test · Paid: Boo Infinity, coins

Boo matches on personality, mainly the 16 MBTI-style types, and its free test tells you yours. Boo’s FAQ says “all the basic features on Boo are completely free: Love, Pass, and messaging with matches.” Direct messages to people you haven’t matched with can cost coins on a free account. Boo also describes itself as “a friends app as much as it is a dating app,” so set your intentions clearly.

Boo Infinity, the subscription, includes free DMs and unlimited loves depending on location. Boo says prices vary by location; the US App Store lists one-week plans from $4.99 to $23.99 and one-month plans at $14.99 and $19.99 (checked November 4, 2026). Boo’s minimum age is 18.

What a free account usually can’t do

Across these eight, the paywall sits in roughly the same places. Knowing where saves you from upgrading on impulse.

  • Seeing who already liked you. Hinge+, Tinder’s higher tiers, Bumble Premium, OkCupid’s subscription and Coffee Meets Bagel Premium all list this as a paid perk.
  • Unlimited likes. Hinge, OkCupid, Tinder and Boo all sell unlimited likes as a headline perk, which tells you the free tier has a cap.
  • Strict filters. OkCupid’s subscription turns preferences into dealbreakers, and Bumble’s advanced filters (including what someone is looking for) sit behind Premium.
  • Visibility. Boosts and Spotlight-style features are sold separately on most apps, from $2.99 for a Bumble Boost to $7.99 for a single Tinder Boost on the US App Store.

None of that stops you meeting people. It changes how fast you see profiles and how much sorting you do yourself.

Two apps that didn’t make it, and why

eharmony and Match are serious, well-known services, but their free tiers are thin. eharmony’s App Store listing says exchanging messages after a match needs Premium. Match is closer: Match’s help center says free members can chat with every match, but you can rate only up to 50 profiles a day, and search, filters and seeing who likes you sit in paid packages. If you’re happy to pay, they belong on a different list, and our Match vs eharmony comparison covers them properly.

Stretching a free account further

The apps above give you enough to meet people without spending anything. A few habits help:

  • Spend your limited likes on profiles you’ve actually read. A comment on a specific prompt does more than a blank like.
  • Use the time limits in your favor. Coffee Meets Bagel’s seven days and Bumble’s 72 hours are nudges to ask someone out, not deadlines to fear.
  • Run two apps, not six. One volume app and one slower app is plenty.
