You get eight free likes a day and every like lands on a specific photo or prompt.

Bumble if you want structure around the first message. Since August 2026 either person can open, but each side gets one opener and a 72-hour clock.

Tinder if you want the fewest hoops and the most swiping. Sign-up asks for little, chat is free once you match, and the paid tiers mostly buy visibility.

All three are free to use. Paying changes how many people you can like and who sees you first. It doesn’t change who likes you back.

These three apps get compared constantly because they look similar from a distance: photos, a short profile, a like, a match, a chat. Up close they are built on different ideas about how two strangers should start talking. That difference matters more than any feature list, so we’ll start there and get to prices after.

Everything below comes from each company’s own help center, App Store listing or press release, read on November 4, 2026. App Store prices are the US in-app purchase list Apple shows, which often lists several prices for one tier without saying which length each belongs to. We quote them as listed.

Three apps, three theories of the first move

Hinge wants you to react to something specific. You don’t like a whole profile; you tap the heart on one photo or one prompt answer and, if you like, add a comment. Hinge’s own mission page says its research found that liking specific pictures or prompts leads to better matches than liking a profile in general. It also caps free likes at eight a day, explaining that when members had more free likes, their matches got worse.

Bumble built its name on women messaging first. That rule is gone. In an August 11, 2026 announcement, Bumble said anyone in a match can now send the first message. The structure that replaced it is still unusual: per Bumble’s support page, you each get one opening message, you have 72 hours from matching to send it, and the chat only fully opens once the other person replies. Opening Moves, the old prompt feature, is no longer part of the experience.

Tinder keeps things light. Its explainer on matching says it only needs your location, gender, and your age, distance and gender preferences to start, and that the biggest factor in who you see is activity: it prioritizes people who are active, and active at the same time. You swipe, you match, you chat for free.

None of these is “better.” They suit different temperaments. Someone who likes writing a sharp two-line comment will enjoy Hinge. Someone who wants to know a match is ready to talk will like Bumble’s clock. Someone who just wants to see who’s around tonight will find Tinder the least friction.

Side by side

Hinge

Bumble

Tinder

Free to match and chat

Yes

Yes

Yes

Free like limit

8 a day (per Hinge’s mission page)

A daily like allowance that resets after 24 hours; number not published

Limited; paid tiers add unlimited Likes; number not published

Who messages first

Either person; a like can carry a comment

Either person, one opener each, 72 hours

Either person after a match

See who liked you

Free: one at a time. You can see who liked you, but only one incoming like at a time. Free filters include gender, distance, age range, ethnicity, relationship type and religion, per Hinge’s preferences article. Height, dating intentions, children, politics and the “vices” filters are for subscribers.

Bumble free gets you swiping, matching, messaging and filters for gender, age, distance, shared interests, verification status and language, per Bumble’s People tab article. Everyone also gets one free Extend a day, which adds 72 hours to a match before it expires. Likes have a daily cap that refreshes 24 hours after you hit it.

Tinder free lets you swipe, match and chat. Rewind (taking back your last swipe), Passport (changing your city) and seeing who liked you are all paid. The free like count is limited, but Tinder doesn’t publish the number.

If your plan is to never pay, Hinge’s free tier is the most generous with information (you can still see your likes, one at a time) and Tinder’s is the most generous with time (no clock on your matches). Bumble’s free tier puts a 72-hour timer on everything, which some people find motivating and others find stressful. Our guide to using dating apps without paying goes deeper on stretching each free tier.

What the paid tiers add

Hinge: Hinge+ and HingeX

Both tiers add unlimited likes, all incoming likes at once, unlimited Undo Skips and the advanced filters. HingeX adds three things on top: it surfaces compatible people sooner in your Discover feed, gives you an always-on light version of Boost, and makes every like a Priority Like that stays near the top of the other person’s Likes You list for seven days.

Hinge sells weekly, monthly, three-month and six-month plans. On November 4, 2026 the US App Store listed “Hinge+ Subscription” at $16.99 and $19.99, “Hinge Subscription” at $14.99, $29.99 and $34.99, and “Membership” at $19.99, without saying which length each covers. Roses were $9.99 for three and $29.99 for twelve; Boost was listed at $9.99 and $19.99. The full breakdown is in our HingeX vs Hinge+ explainer.

Bumble: Boost, Premium and Premium+

Boost is the entry tier: unlimited likes, five SuperSwipes and one Spotlight a week, unlimited Extends, Rematch for expired connections and unlimited Backtrack.

Premium adds the Liked You queue, advanced filters, Incognito Mode and Travel Mode.

Premium+ adds photo insights, fast-tracked likes, priority in other people’s feeds, and a weekly allowance of two Notes, ten SuperSwipes and two Spotlights.

The US App Store listed Bumble Premium at $17.99, $19.99 and $32.99, and Bumble Boost at prices from $2.99 to $12.99. Premium+ wasn’t on the public list, so we couldn’t confirm its price. More in our Bumble Premium vs Premium+ breakdown.

Tinder: Plus, Gold and Platinum

Plus gives unlimited likes, unlimited Rewinds, Passport, no ads (Tinder notes some Plus subscribers may see ads during testing) and Incognito.

Gold adds weekly Super Likes, one Boost a month (not on weekly plans, and Tinder says some Gold plans may not include it during testing) and the Likes page showing who liked you.

Platinum adds Prioritized Likes, meaning your Likes and Super Likes are seen faster than non-subscribers'.

The App Store listed Tinder Plus at $9.99 and Tinder Gold at $13.99, $14.99, $18.99 and $24.99. Platinum wasn’t on the public list, so we couldn’t confirm a price. Boosts were listed at $3.99, $6.99 and $7.99. See our Tinder Gold vs Platinum guide for the tier-by-tier detail.

A note on all three: prices change by age, location, platform and promotion, and you’ll see your own offer in the app. Treat the numbers above as the range Apple showed on one day.

Clocks, limits and expiry

The three apps also differ in how much time pressure they put on you, which is easy to miss until you’re in it.

Bumble is the strictest. A match expires if nobody sends an opener within 72 hours, per its expired matches page. You get one free Extend a day; Boost, Premium and Premium+ members get unlimited Extends, and Boost and Premium add Rematch for connections that lapsed.

Hinge doesn’t expire matches on a timer, but it limits how many you can leave hanging. Its Your Turn Limits feature blocks new likes, sent or received, once too many matches are waiting on your reply. Paying doesn’t exempt you.

Tinder has neither rule in its help center. Matches sit in your list until someone unmatches. That’s freeing if you’re busy, and the reason some Tinder chats never start at all.

Safety and verification

All three run a selfie-video check that compares you to your profile photos and adds a badge. The details differ:

Hinge: Selfie Verification is voluntary, though Hinge says a biometric Face Check is required in certain regions. Changing photos after verifying can remove the badge.

Bumble: Photo Verification is mandatory in the US and optional elsewhere. Bumble uses automated and human review.

Tinder: Photo Verification is voluntary and uses facial recognition against your profile photos. An ID-plus-photo option exists only in select test markets.

Every one of these companies says the same thing in its own words: a badge is not a guarantee. Meet in public, tell a friend, and keep the first conversation on the app.

Pick Hinge if…

You want something that might turn into a relationship and you’re willing to put effort into a profile. Hinge requires four to six photos (depending on local rules) and three prompt answers, per its profile help page. That bar filters out some low-effort accounts on both sides.

It also suits people who hate being ghosted. Hinge’s Your Turn Limits stop anyone, subscribers included, from collecting new likes once too many matches are waiting on them for a reply. And Match Note lets you put a dealbreaker (kids, distance, faith) in front of a match before the chat starts.

Skip it if you want volume. Eight likes a day is deliberately small.

Pick Bumble if…

You like a bit of choreography. The one-opener rule means you know the other person had to write something, and Bumble nudges people away from “hey.” Verified profiles are standard in the US because Photo Verification is mandatory there, per Bumble’s verification page.

It’s also a reasonable pick if you came to Bumble for the women-first rule and want to see how the new system feels. Women can still send the first message; they just aren’t the only ones who can.

Skip it if the 72-hour clock will make you anxious, or if you often go a few days without opening an app.

Pick Tinder if…

You want the fastest route from download to match and you’re fine with a lighter profile. Tinder suits people who are new to a city (Passport and Explore help), people who want to meet others through shared interests via Explore, and people who are open about what they’re looking for and want to see a wide range of profiles.

Skip it if you want the app to do more of the sorting for you. Tinder’s matching weights activity heavily, so it rewards regular use more than a polished profile. Our explainer on how Tinder works covers the details.

Other options worth a look

Not sold on any of the three?

OkCupid asks you to answer matching questions and shows a match percentage based on your answers. It’s free to use; the US App Store listed OkCupid Premium from $7.99 to $59.99 on November 4, 2026, which adds seeing who liked you, unlimited likes and dealbreakers.

Coffee Meets Bagel sends a small, curated batch at noon every day and lets you like, pass and chat with those suggestions for free, per its help center. Our Coffee Meets Bagel explainer has its tiers and prices.

For a wider field, see our Hinge alternatives and Tinder alternatives lists.

Can you just use all three?

Yes, and plenty of people do. The free tiers don’t conflict, and you’ll learn quickly which interface fits how you talk. If you do, two practical tips. Keep your photos consistent across apps so verified badges stay valid (both Hinge and Tinder say changing photos can cost you verification). And watch your renewals: all three paid tiers auto-renew, and on iPhone you cancel through Apple, not the app.

Our suggestion is simpler: download two, give each two weeks of honest use, then delete the one you dread opening. The app you’ll actually use beats the app with the better feature list.

Best dating apps in 2026: 10 compared on price, features and who they suit

Short version: if you want a relationship and like reading profiles, start with Hinge. If you want the biggest, fastest pool and don’t mind swiping, Tinder. If you would rather pay for a slower, compatibility-led process, look at eharmony or Match. If you refuse to pay anything at all, Facebook Dating and OkCupid give you the most room on a free account.

Everything below that is a question of fit, and that is how we ordered the list. There is no score here and no “winner.” There is what each app does, what it costs as of November 4, 2026, and who it tends to suit.

Pick by goal

Your goal

Start with

Also worth a look

A relationship, with profiles you actually read

Hinge

Coffee Meets Bagel

The largest pool, quick matching

Tinder

Plenty of Fish

More control over who starts the chat

Bumble

Hinge

A structured, compatibility-first process

eharmony

Match

Paying nothing

Facebook Dating

OkCupid

A smaller, vetted pool

The League

Coffee Meets Bagel

Matching on values and opinions

OkCupid

eharmony

How we picked

We started from the apps most US daters will actually find in the App Store, then kept the ones that are live in the US store (every app here had an update in the past month when we checked on November 4, 2026), publish their paid tiers, and describe their features on official pages. Prices come from each app’s US App Store listing or official site, dated. Where an app’s own pages didn’t confirm something, we say so.

A note on the prices: App Store in-app purchase lists often show several price points for the same tier with no subscription length attached. We quote them as listed. Treat them as the range Apple displays, not a quote for your account.

What changed this year

Three changes matter if you last used these apps a while ago.

Bumble dropped its women-first rule in August 2026. Either person can now open, and replies get 72 hours instead of 24.

Tinder has been pushing intentions. Its latest App Store release notes say it now does a better job of matching people who want the same kind of relationship, casual or long-term, and it has added Double Date for meeting with a friend.

Facebook Dating has added AI help. Its dating assistant and weekly Meet Cute surprise match arrived in late 2025, and Meta still describes the whole thing as free.

The pattern across the market is the same: fewer, better-targeted matches and more nudges toward actually meeting. Paid tiers mostly sell visibility (boosts, priority likes) and shortcuts (seeing who already liked you), not access to messaging. That is good news if you plan to stay on a free account.

Hinge

Free tier: yes · Paid: Hinge+ and HingeX · Best for: relationship-minded daters who like detail

Hinge calls itself the app “designed to be deleted,” and the product follows from that. Profiles are built around prompts, photos, video and voice, and every match starts with someone liking or commenting on a specific part of your profile. Profiles can show religion, politics, height, dating intentions and relationship type, which saves a lot of guesswork before a first message. Selfie Verification is built in.

Hinge says the app is free to use. Hinge+ adds unlimited likes and lets you see everyone who has liked you. HingeX adds what Hinge calls enhanced recommendations and priority likes. On the US App Store (checked November 4, 2026), Hinge+ shows at $16.99 and $19.99, with other Hinge subscriptions listed at $14.99, $29.99 and $34.99; the listing doesn’t say which durations those cover. Roses sell at $9.99 for three or $29.99 for twelve. If you are deciding whether to pay, our breakdown of whether Hinge is worth paying for goes tier by tier.

Limits: the free daily like count is the main squeeze, and the app is built for people who want to date with intent. If you want quick, casual chat, it can feel slow.

Tinder

Free tier: yes · Paid: Tinder Plus, Gold, Platinum · Best for: the biggest pool and fast matching

Tinder is still the default for a reason: Pew Research Center’s 2022 survey found that 46% of US adults who had used a dating site or app had used Tinder, more than any other platform it asked about (Pew, February 2023). You swipe, you match when both people like each other, and you can chat without paying. Profiles now carry prompts, and Tinder’s recent additions include Double Date (bring a friend) and a way to set the kind of relationship you want, casual or long-term.

Plus, Gold and Platinum are optional subscriptions. Tinder’s own description lists unlimited likes, weekly Super Likes, unlimited rewinds and monthly Boosts among the paid perks, and higher tiers let you see who already liked you. The US App Store (checked November 4, 2026) lists Tinder Plus at $9.99 and Tinder Gold at $13.99, $14.99, $18.99 and $24.99, without durations, plus single Boosts from $3.99 to $7.99.

Limits: a large pool also means a lot of noise. If you want a relationship, you will do more filtering yourself.

Bumble

Free tier: yes · Paid: Bumble Premium, Boost, Premium+ · Best for: people who want a calmer pace to the first message

Bumble changed its signature rule this year. Since August 11, 2026, anyone in a match can send the first message, not only women in opposite-sex matches. You get one opening message, the other person has 72 hours to reply (up from 24), and the chat only opens once they do. Bumble also prompts you to try harder if you send a one-word opener. All of this comes from Bumble’s own August 11 announcement.

The free app includes ID Verification, video chat and a Snooze mode. Premium adds advanced filters (including what someone is looking for), Incognito Mode, Travel Mode, rematching with expired connections and seeing everyone who likes you. On the US App Store (checked November 4, 2026), Bumble Premium shows at $17.99, $19.99 and $32.99, with Boost from $2.99 to $12.99; no durations are listed. For a head-to-head, see Hinge vs Bumble vs Tinder.

Limits: the one-message rule means a weak opener costs you. Write something specific.

Match

Free tier: limited · Paid: Match subscriptions · Best for: daters who want a long-running, search-led service

Match is one of the oldest names in online dating, and the app still leans on search and filters more than swiping. Its App Store listing says free users can build a profile, browse daily match suggestions and join virtual and in-person singles events, and Match’s help center says free members can chat with every match and rate up to 50 profiles a day. Paid packages run from Bronze (unlimited likes, rewinds) through Silver (see who likes you) and Platinum (advanced filters, unlimited search, read receipts) to Diamond, and Match says packages may change by location.

Pricing is on the steep side. The US App Store (checked November 4, 2026) lists “1 Month Standard” and “1 Month Basic” at $44.99 each, a six-month bundle at $129.99, and other Match subscriptions at $19.99, $42.99 and $74.99.

Limits: the daily cap on profiles and the paywall on search mean most people who stay end up paying.

eharmony

Free tier: limited · Paid: Premium · Best for: people who want compatibility matching and don’t mind paying

eharmony matches you through its Compatibility Quiz, and each match shows a compatibility score. The app says every profile must be at least 50% complete, which filters out a lot of empty accounts. The free Basic membership lets you look around, like profiles and send a first message, but exchanging messages after you match requires Premium.

The US App Store (checked November 4, 2026) lists “eHarmony Basic” purchases from $59.99 to $179.99 and “PREMIUM light” from $179.99 to $349.99. The listing doesn’t give durations, so these are best read as multi-month plans.

Limits: the most expensive app here, and a poor fit if you want to try before committing money.

OkCupid

Free tier: yes · Paid: OkCupid Premium, A-List · Best for: matching on values, opinions and identity

OkCupid’s core is its question bank: more than 500 questions about habits, values and preferences, which feed a compatibility score on each profile. It is explicitly inclusive, with options for LGBTQ+ daters, and it gives you Cupid’s Picks, a daily set of personalized matches. You can start conversations on the free app.

A subscription lets you see everyone who has liked you, send unlimited likes and turn preferences into dealbreakers. The US App Store (checked November 4, 2026) lists OkCupid Premium from $7.99 to $59.99 and A-List at $9.99, again without durations.

Limits: the questions only work if you answer a decent number of them. Skip them and OkCupid behaves like any other swipe app.

Coffee Meets Bagel

Free tier: yes · Paid: Premium, Platinum · Best for: people who want fewer, more curated matches

Coffee Meets Bagel sends you a small daily batch of curated matches instead of an endless feed. Chats have a seven-day limit, designed to push you toward meeting in person or moving on. The company says 91% of its daters are looking for a serious relationship (that is its own figure, not an independent survey).

Premium adds unlimited Suggested profiles, the ability to see all your likes, flowers and a monthly Boost. The US App Store (checked November 4, 2026) lists Premium at $34.99 or $39.99 for one month and $74.99 for three months, and Platinum at $46.99 or $54.99 for one month and $99.99 for three months.

Limits: the small daily batch is the point, but in a smaller city it can run thin.

Facebook Dating

Free tier: yes, fully · Paid: none · Best for: anyone who wants to pay nothing

Facebook Dating lives inside the Facebook app, so there is nothing separate to download. Meta describes it as “a free dating experience within the Facebook app” and says it wants people to meet without “paying to unlock product features” (Meta, September 2025). Recent additions include a dating assistant you can chat with for match ideas (rolling out in the US and Canada) and Meet Cute, a weekly surprise match you can switch off. Meta says your Dating profile and conversations aren’t shared outside Dating.

Limits: you need a Facebook account, and the experience depends on how many people near you have switched Dating on.

The League

Free tier: yes · Paid: League memberships · Best for: ambitious, career-focused daters who want a smaller pool

The League uses an application process and gives members a curated daily “Batch” of potential matches rather than unlimited profiles. It says it wants members with “real motivation to find a meaningful long-term relationship.” You can use it free; subscribers see more profiles each day.

It is the priciest app here per week, and The League’s help center says pricing varies by region and changes over time. The US App Store (checked November 4, 2026) lists League Monthly Dues at $19.99, a one-week Premium membership at $59.99, a one-month Premium membership at $99.99, and a one-week Unlimited membership at $99.99. The waitlist and requirements are covered in The League app cost.

Limits: you may wait to get in, and outside large cities the pool is small.

Plenty of Fish

Free tier: yes · Paid: POF Premium, tokens · Best for: lots of free messaging with matches

Plenty of Fish (POF) gives free users more messaging room than most. Its Google Play listing says that once you and someone both swipe right in Meet Me, you have unlimited messaging with each other. You also get one First Contact a day, a direct message to someone you haven’t matched with. Selfie Verification and a Share My Date feature are built in.

The US App Store (checked November 4, 2026) lists a one-week subscription at $19.99, a one-month subscription at $29.99, POF Premium at $29.99, and tokens from $1.99 for one to $17.99 for ten.

Limits: the open design attracts a broad, mixed crowd, so expect to filter.

If you only download two

Pair one “big pool” app with one “slower” app. Tinder or Plenty of Fish for volume, plus Hinge or Coffee Meets Bagel for depth, covers most people. Give the free tiers a few weeks before paying for anything. Our guide to using dating apps without paying explains what to try first.
